NEWSTAR

AGIdeas wanted to elevate their annual Newstar competition - the one that sends lucky creative youngsters abroad to studios with international acclaim. Dwindling numbers of students applying for (or even hearing about) the comp prompted us to try a new approach to their usual post-card campaign.

A series of A1 feel-good posters with some fresh Pantones and some wheat paste seemed to hit the spot. The copy lines ran with the idea that the reader had already won the competition (best-foot-forward kinda thing), allowing the messaging to be as bright and positive as possible.

Coupled with some small-scale online media, the posters helped to double
the number of entries to the competition from the previous year.

Screening some posters as a leaving gift for friends using some classic

SERIGRAFIA

Setting up DIY, ghetto-style screen-printing in my garage. It's messy, it takes a lot longer than pressing print, it's real, and it's far more rewarding than laser printing to say the least. Nothing commercial at the moment, just projects for friends and family.

DON'T WORK FOR PEANUTS

A conversation I had with some design friends lead me to write this short piece on internships. More specifically on so called 'unpaid internships'.

<img src="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/0/2635/2866269/Peanuts.jpg" width="570" height="812" width_o="570" height_o="812" src_o="http://payload28.cargocollective.com/1/0/2635/2866269/Peanuts_o.jpg" data-mid="14571912" border="0" align="left"/>

Excerpt:

The issue is not about whether or not students should accept paid or unpaid internships,
the issue is whether or not the studio values design enough to pay potential designers.

This is an interesting issue and one that needs to be talked through more in the design industry.

In Australia the ‘value’ of design is not very well understood by the public, by clients or even
by some designers for that matter. Hence over the last few years there have been numerous publications, manifestos and events to try and increase the awareness of the positive contributions design offers to our country as a whole.

It’s interesting how many studios in our industry speak of how design is, in general, undervalued or misunderstood, but then at the same time take on unpaid interns as if this, in some way, ‘values’ them as designers. Yes they have little-to-no ‘experience’ in a studio setting but they are more than likely creative individuals who contribute to the studio in many ways. Students straight out of university often bring fresh, creative ideas and thinking into the studio environment. Simply not paying them at all has the potential to instill in them an attitude of indifference towards their work.

It’s an interesting point to say that it takes time and money out of the studio in order to take on an intern, and in many ways the experience gained (in most cases) by the intern is far greater than the contributions they then offer in return to the studio. But does this then call for their work to be unpaid? In almost all situations students will have little to no knowledge of exactly how much they are actually worth. By agreeing to an unpaid internship their work, as a monetary value, is effectively zero. This then may lead the intern to undervalue their skills, possibly then leading them to accept lower wages as junior designers. This is not necessarily what happens to everyone, but for inexperienced juniors it can and does happen.

For recently graduated students living out of home, who may work in a part time or casual
job, taking up a three month unpaid internship is simply out of the question. In what is becoming standard practice this does not speak very highly of the design industries respect
for its own kind.

The exchange of ‘experience’ for ‘unpaid work’ can be a very convincing argument, especially when big name studios are concerned, but that is only the case when employers do not value the input of interns. This argument leads one to assume that the intern is in fact baggage, and not someone who contributes, and not someone worth paying for. Many Australian studios are against the practise of unpaid pitch work, and to be fair should also be against the practise of unpaid internships.

Looking at it from the point of view of the individual designer, if the three unpaid months gets your foot in the door and leads you to a lifelong career in design, it can be tempting to see this as a necessary sacrifice. But that is wrong. Instead we should question its relevance as an industry practice. Why aren’t studios paying their interns? How does not paying interns encourage intelligent, creative individuals to venture into the field of design?

Don’t work for peanuts, you’re worth more than that, much more.

CURLY GIBBON

A small, boutique brand made to accompany some baked brownies, muffins and cakes to market. The peculiar name and concept came from the bakers own witty play on her surname, 'Curlis-Gibson'.

Curly Gibbon needed a mark that was rich and playful to match the deliciously tempting cakes and muffins that it would be selling to mums and chocolate-lovers alike.

Some very curly custom typography was made so the happy little gibbon could help the brand swing towards more of a hand-made look and feel.

THAT! Dairy Snack

What is that? Recognised as one of the leading suppliers of healthy desserts to Australians since 1974, ProPortion Foods approached Elmwood to design an all new kids dairy yogurt, with some added punch.

The yogurt needed to be fun and engaging but most of all it needed to generate a sense of curiosity for youngsters. After a thorough naming process, we landed on That!. The name stuck and placed the yogurt somewhere between bizarre mystery and amusing playfulness.

Bold typography, saturated colours, wild monster eyes and curly, stripy tails all combined to create one hell of an exploding snack, perfect for That!

A simple pack structure was put in place to ensure any and all future variants would fall nicely in line with existing flavours.

I loved working on this project. Knowing that it was a healthy treat for kids allowed me to justify making it look 'cool enough' to be seen eating in the school yard. The illustrations were fun to make, and my graphic style inherently lends itself towards children's illustration.

QUARTER SANS

First of all, I'm not a typographer. Nonetheless, the sense of exploration I felt creating a font from sketch to a finished TTF file, was well worth the trouble. Working with FontLab, a professional grade font program, introduced me to some of the intricacies of creating a font (oh the kerning pairs!).

I have no real official training when it comes to creating type, except what I've picked up and what I've read. It takes long hours, years of dedication, and a very acute sense of appreciation to become a typographer. It's quite difficult to say the least, and is a field I'm interested in.

Quarter Sans is a (more or less) monospaced, (mostly) sans serif typeface, developed from the notion of the grid, and dividing that grid into quarters, hence the name. I created, as best I could, three separate weights: light, regular and bold. If nothing else it is my first attempt at making a font.

You can download it here.<img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/0/2635/2550063/Quarter_01_1.png" width="570" height="350" width_o="570" height_o="350" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/0/2635/2550063/Quarter_01_1_o.png" data-mid="12875927" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/0/2635/2550063/Quarter_02_2.jpeg" width="570" height="350" width_o="570" height_o="350" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/0/2635/2550063/Quarter_02_2_o.jpeg" data-mid="12875928" border="0" align="left"/><img src="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/0/2635/2550063/Quarter_03_3.jpeg" width="570" height="350" width_o="570" height_o="350" src_o="http://payload12.cargocollective.com/1/0/2635/2550063/Quarter_03_3_o.jpeg" data-mid="12875934" border="0" align="left"/>

MUNCHY'S

Ranked the #1 biscuit brand of Malaysia, Munchy's approached Elmwood to redesign their Identity to try and re-connect with the current Malaysian youth market.

The concepts shown here were developed to launch Munchy's into a fun, wild territory that put their brand into the mouths of some local malaysian animals. The custom type was created to give Munchy's a distinct, own-able place on shelf, and to steer away from their existing corporate identity.

COPY THIS

This group-based research project looked into how universities are informing design students about copyright law. With the advent of advanced communication networks, the effects of Intellectual Property on design has become increasingly important now more than ever. It seems only fitting that one of Australia's top design degrees should require students to have at least a basic understanding of the laws that will inevitably shape their work.

Our solution was simple and, more importantly, practical. The main challenge we faced was that of digesting and reducing the complexities of copyright law into a plain language. Students essentially needed something relevant that spoke to them in a language they could understand. After completing rigorous background research and interviewing students at length we developed a booklet that covered all the basics.

MARA SALVATRUCHA

The heavy use of signs and symbols within gang culture are employed not only to exclude others, but also to communicate meaning and purpose for their members.

The violent El Salvadorian gang Mara Salvatrucha (or MS13) is an example of a group that has formed its own specific language and displays this notoriously and proudly on their skin as tattoos.

A non-fictional narrative was chosen from the LA Times, and was presented back in the form of a series of sequential tattoos to show an alternative way of reading into the socially conflicted lives of three hard-knock MS members.

The narrative is transformed from being a purely text-based communication piece to being a visually engaging one, of which the viewer is prompted to decipher and interpret.
