This group-based research project looked into how universities are informing design students about copyright law. With the advent of advanced communication networks, the effects of Intellectual Property on design has become increasingly important now more than ever. It seems only fitting that one of Australia's top design degrees should require students to have at least a basic understanding of the laws that will inevitably shape their work.
Our solution was simple and, more importantly, practical. The main challenge we faced was that of digesting and reducing the complexities of copyright law into a plain language. Students essentially needed something relevant that spoke to them in a language they could understand. After completing rigorous background research and interviewing students at length we developed a booklet that covered all the basics.
